The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

The School’s Faculty of Public Health and Policy (PHP) wishes to appoint three posts at Professor or Associate Professor level. The successful applicants will be central to our future research and teaching programmes.

We are particularly interested in applications from those with expertise in health services research, behavioural science, health financing, public involvement and engagement, or social care.

We require dynamic, highly motivated individuals who will develop research programmes in their area(s) of expertise to complement our ongoing research activities. These posts will offer unusual opportunities for the development of innovative research programmes within a highly supportive, collegiate environment. In Public Health and Policy, we undertake wide-ranging research of international significance that has direct relevance to policy. The faculty directs major NIHR funded units that support evidence-based policy including the Policy Innovation Research Unit, the Public Health Policy Research Unit, and leads the National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN) funded by NHS England. Health financing research has focused on pay-for-performance, financing primary health care, and analysis of development assistance for health.

The postholders will have the opportunity to work in close cross-disciplinary collaboration with colleagues across the faculty. Each postholder will be supported to develop and sustain a research programme in their areas of prime interest.

Candidates applying as an Associate Professor must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant topic, and will have:

  • A track record of contributions as lead and co-author to peer-reviewed outputs, and a consistent and significant track record of attracting research grant income from major research funders.

Professorial candidates will have:

  • An excellent track record of publishing as lead, senior and co-author in peer-reviewed outputs;
  • Proven ability to obtain research funding from external funders and manage a significant portfolio of research projects;
  • Clear vision of a future research agenda;
  • Substantial evidence of recognition within external research community.

The posts are available full-time, 35 hours per week at 1 FTE (part-time appointments will be considered at 0.6 FTE and above). The roles are permanent and available from 1 October 2024.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway scale, Grade 8 (£62,028 - £71,192 per annum pro rata) or the Professorial scale (£71,332 - £114,827 per annum pro rata). Salaries are inclusive of London Weighting.

The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in the Tavistock Place building of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

LSHTM operates a hybrid working model allowing a mix of on-site and at home working for this role. Staff are expected to attend LSHTM buildings 8 days per month on average (pro-rata for part-time staff). Staff who prefer to attend the office more than this amount can do so (including every day). Onsite working days are flexible and can be agreed with Line Managers.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk. Informal queries about the positions can be directed to Kara Hanson, Dean of Faculty (kara.hanson@lshtm.ac.uk).

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that interviews are scheduled for the following dates: 28 June 2024, 16 July 2024 and 17 July 2024.  If you are shortlisted and are unable to attend an interview on one of these dates it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
