The Department of Global Health and Development is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the UK Public Health Rapid Support Team (UK-PHRST). The successful candidate will work with the UK-PHRST lead social scientist, other UK-PHRST core team members, and with field teams in Sierra Leone.

Duties will include study inception, conducting research on Lassa fever and health seeking behavior in Sierra Leone, and working with the team to disseminate findings to a wide audience of communities, policy makers, health workers, and academic colleagues in Sierra Leone and internationally. The post-holder will also support on other projects within the UK-PHRST social science portfolio. 

The post holder will report to the Project Investigator and will not directly line manage any staff but may be asked to support students or researchers technically or logistically to ensure the research is successful. The post holder will be based in London but will expected to spend significant periods of time in both rural and urban Sierra Leone conducting and overseeing research there. 

The role will require relevant experience in social science, public health, or a related field, as well as proven ability to conduct, coordinate and deliver social science projects in sub-Saharan Africa. Knowledge of social and political perspectives on infectious disease outbreaks would be an advantage. 

The post is full-time and based in the Tavistock Place building of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Although the post is based in London, the Research Fellow will be expected to travel to and reside in Sierra Leone for discrete periods during the data collection phases of the project. 

The post is available from January 2019. The salary will be on the Academic Grade 6 scale in the range £39,304 £44,634 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting), and is funded for 12 months. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
