The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia is one of the largest scientific research centres in sub-Saharan Africa, having an international reputation for ground-breaking research into some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the tropics. Our overall goal is to improve health in West Africa and beyond by aiming for excellence in research, healthcare and training. Our research program spans basic scientific research, clinical studies, epidemiological studies and intervention trials, and translational research. The field and laboratory-based work draws on excellent research and clinical facilities and attracts international funding. 

We are seeking to recruit a mid-career researcher to lead the Unit’s Genomics Strategic Core Platform which comprises the Genomics, Bioinformatics, and High-Performance Computing. The post holder will both provide support to investigators in the field of genomics and develop his/her own research and training program based on the Genomics Platform. 

The postholder will possess a doctoral degree in Medical Sciences and have expertise in running and analysing Next-Gen technologies and management of large and complex diagnostic and generic data, including whole genome sequencing.

The post holder will focus on ensuring coordination between the three different components of the platform - genomics laboratory, bioinformatics, and high-performance computing - and further develop collaborative links on genomics research with relevant African institutions and beyond and in collaboration with others apply for external grants/fellowships or developing and maintaining a research grant portfolio from good research funders.

The salary is on the Academic Staff scale and is from £46,704 - £64,817 per annum.  The post is subject to LSHTM terms and conditions of service and is offered initially until 31 July 2024.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition, there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the pension scheme is available. Free-furnished residential accommodation is provided and a package of overseas allowances is available.
