The Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia is one of the largest scientific research centres in sub-Saharan Africa, having an international reputation for ground-breaking research into some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the tropics. Our overall goal is to improve the health of people in developing countries by aiming for excellence in research, healthcare and training. Our research program spans basic scientific research, clinical studies, epidemiological studies and intervention trials, and translational research. The field and laboratory-based work draws on excellent research and clinical facilities and attracts international funding.

We are seeking an experienced professional to lead and further develop our Governance and Research Support Services.  Based on our Fajara campus, within the urban area of The Gambia, with travel to the field stations in Basse, Keneba and Walikunda, and externally, as required, the successful candidate will hold a postgraduate degree or professional qualification in a relevant field, with formal training in ICH-GCP.  Experience in the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of clinical trials as well as expert knowledge of clinical trial methodology and regulatory requirements is paramount.

The post-holder will serve as the Unit’s focal person on research governance and compliance, ensuring that the Unit continues to offer a portfolio of high-quality clinical trials and maintain its reputation as a centre of excellence for delivering clinical trials.  Managing a wide range of external funding projects, they will develop new collaborations, and strengthen existing ones as well as be a key member of the Unit’s Scientific Coordinating Committee, responsible for evaluating all proposals for their scientific merit and relevance to the Unit’s research mission.

The salary is on the Professional Services scale from £55,474 - £63,671 per annum.  The post is subject to LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition, there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. Free-furnished residential accommodation is provided and a package of overseas allowances is available if the successful candidate needs to relocate to The Gambia.
