Research Fellow

Department of Pathogen Molecular Biology

Salary:  £38,533 to £43,759 per annum, inclusive.
Closing Date:  Wednesday 13 June 2018
Reference:  ITD-PMBD-2018-08

We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to undertake research on Chagas disease and its causative agent, the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The project, which is funded by the MRC, aims to elucidate mechanisms of infection chronicity and pathogenesis in the digestive form of Chagas disease. We have recently discovered that T. cruzi uses the digestive tract as a permissive reservoir site in chronic infections. This results in pathological changes to the enteric muscles and nervous system, often leading to debilitating digestive megasyndromes. We plan to combine experimental infection models and bioluminescence imaging with neurological and immunological analyses to develop a better understanding of Chagas disease pathogenesis. The post will be based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s headquarters in London.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in biological sciences, extensive experience of working with animal models and advanced proficiency in molecular and cell biological techniques. A good publication record, commensurate with experience, is expected. The successful candidate will be proficient in computer applications for data processing, statistical analysis, written reports and oral presentations. Applicants with a strong background in digestive tract or parasitological research including experience in techniques for analysis of the enteric nervous system or host-pathogen interactions would be particularly welcome. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.

The post will be based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine’s headquarters in London.

This full-time post is available from 1st August 2018 and is funded by the MRC for three years.
