Specialist/Senior Biomedical Scientist

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Biomedical Scientist in the Teaching and Diagnostic Unit within the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.  The post holder will carry out appropriate tests for the identification of malaria parasites in specimens received at the Public Health England (PHE) Malaria Reference Laboratory (MRL) and assist in the development and implementation of new diagnostic molecular methods. 

The post-holder will assist the Principal Biomedical Scientist with the day-to-day provision of the diagnostic service. 

The post-holder will carry out molecular methods on blood samples for the diagnosis, resistance monitoring and surveillance of imported malaria in the UK and interpret and validate the results of such methods; process and interpret malaria blood films submitted to the laboratory for confirmation; have responsibility for the day to day upkeep of the molecular laboratory including preparation of media, reagents and waste disposal and oversee the collection, curation and storage of malaria isolates from samples received at the MRL; assist the Lead Molecular BMS with the development and validation of novel diagnostic methods for routine use by the Diagnostic Laboratory.

The successful applicant will have a degree or equivalent in a science subject and hold registration with the HCPC, must be able to comply with the continuing professional development requirements of HCPC registration, have experience in molecular techniques, preferably including in-house molecular assays, excellent organisational and communication skills and considerable experience of working in a routine diagnostic/clinical laboratory. Experience in microscopic techniques and writing SOPs and risk assessments would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.

This full-time post based in London is funded by Public Health England for a period of 2 years in the first instance. Salary is on the Professional Support Grade 5 scale in the range £33,567 - £38,533 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London.
