Research Fellow or Assistant Professor in Modelling and Vaccine Evaluation for Emerging Infections

Applications are invited for a mathematical modeller to join the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). The post holder will work on a large project studying transmission of emerging infections, to improve the design of vaccine trials during outbreaks. 

This post involves design of transmission models for priority emerging diseases and fitting those models to available data. The post-holder will focus initially on Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, with other pathogens to be determined as work progresses. The post-holder will use transmission models to simulate and evaluate phase 3 vaccine trials, and determine optimal trial designs and vaccination strategies for outbreaks of these diseases.

The post holder will have experience of constructing and analysing mathematical or statistical models of infectious diseases; familiarity with statistical approaches for model fitting (e.g. MCMC, particle filtering, etc); programming using specialist mathematical or statistical packages and/or of programming languages, ideally R; experience in understanding and analysing epidemiological data, ideally from outbreaks proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a research team, and proven ability to meet research deadlines; a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in mathematical modelling, statistics or other relevant field. Applicants at Assistant Professor level require a doctoral degree in in mathematical modelling, statistics or other relevant field. Further particulars are included in the job description. 

This full-time post, based in London, is fixed term until 31st March 2021. The salary will be on the Academic scale, Grade 6 (Research Fellow) in the range £40,011 - £45,437 or Grade 7 (Assistant Professor) in the range £46,704 - £53,465 per annum (both inclusive of London weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
