Research Fellow in Real-Time Modelling of Cholera Outbreaks (0.2 FTE)

Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology

Salary:  £39,304 to £44,634 per annum, pro rata.
Closing Date:  Tuesday 26 March 2019
Interview Date:  To be confirmed
Reference:  EPH-IDE-2019-09

A post is available to join a team conducting research on mathematical models to inform decision making in real-time during infectious disease outbreaks. The posts are funded by the Wellcome Trust and will be based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The post-holders will be supervised by Dr Sebastian Funk and will join a highly successful and supportive group at the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling (CMMID).

The main task will be to contribute to the development of methods for model-based forecasting that can be readily deployed in a cholera outbreak. It will involve a systematic assessment of the predictive ability of these forecasts. The post-holder will be using historical, current and future cholera data sets to test a range of approaches for their ability to generate useful predictions. There is considerable scope for the development and use of state-of-the-art methodology and computation, as well as for research with a direct impact on improving public health.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics or computational biology, or similar research experience. Candidates should have proficient knowledge of a programming language for mathematical or statistical modelling, such as R, Python, Julia or C/C++, and be committed to open research and/or software development. Experience in outbreak analysis or model-based forecasting would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.

The post is available at 0.2 FTE starting on June 1st 2019 and funded for a year in the first instance. The appointment will be made on the School’s Academic pathway salary scale Grade 6, in the range £39,304 - £44,634 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London weighting).
