Research Software Engineer

Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology

The purpose of this job is to join a new team that will develop free, open-source software for outbreak analytics, to support national and international preparedness and response. The role will be part of the major new Epiverse-TRACE project at LSHTM, a joint collaboration between researchers in London and The Gambia supported by data.org as part of Epiverse initiative, building on previous policy-relevant analysis for outbreaks such as COVID-19 and Ebola within our Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases (CMMID), and analytics development programmes such as the R Epidemics Consortium and EpiForecasts.

Beyond contributions to code, documentation, testing, code reviews, and training, the post holder will ensure that tools are fully integrated in the current software ecosystem and build, when possible, on existing code bases. The post holder will be responsible for implementing the general software engineering vision and strategies outlined by the project’s leadership, and for releasing and maintaining software packages. The main programming language used will be R.

The postholder will have a MSc degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline and experience with developing or contributing to R packages. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time, fixed term until 31/08/2024 and available immediately.

The salary will be on the Professional Services salary scale Grade 6 in the range £41,829-£45,417 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
