Professor in Demography

Department of Population Health

Salary:  £70,753 to £105,601 per annum, inclusive.
Closing Date:  Monday 01 March 2021
Reference:  EPH-DPH-2020-28

LSHTM is seeking to appoint a senior academic as Brass-Blacker Professor in Demography. This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established and highly regarded group of demographers and population scientists embedded within a world-leading School for public and global health. The role will shape future demographic research and teaching at LSHTM and provide opportunities to collaborate across LSHTM on issues of global concern.

LSHTM has an exciting opportunity for a Professor in Demography, to fill the Brass-Blacker Chair. This is an endowed Chair, funded through a bequest to the School by John Blacker. The substantive area of specialisation of the post holder is open, but we are keen to recruit a leading formal demographer, or data scientist or statistician with an explicit interest in population issues, who is excited by the opportunity to join with the LSHTM’s world class experts in addressing pressing global problems.

The Brass-Blacker Chair will be a member of the Population Studies Group (PSG), in the Department of Population Health. PSG is a vibrant hub of demographers as well as staff from a wide variety of other disciplines who work on demographic and related subjects. Demographic research and training has been part of LSHTM’s fabric since 1964, when Bill Brass became the first reader in Medical Demography at the School. LSHTM’s international reputation for demography and population research is built on its contributions to technical demography and reproductive health research, often, though not exclusively, with a focus on low and middle income countries. This role offers an opportunity to shape the future of demography at the School, taking forward the research agenda and teaching programme of a discipline so vital to current global health concerns.

The ideal candidate would be a dynamic advocate for demography, with a strong track record of collaboration and grant funding, an excellent publication record, working in an area of global importance where demography is a core skill, and be committed to providing high quality teaching and maintaining respectful working relationships. The successful candidate will need to have expertise in demography and its application to address public and global health challenges aligned with the broader strategic objectives of LSHTM. Further particulars are included in the Job description.

This Brass-Blacker Chair offers a rare opportunity for a senior academic to join a well-established and highly regarded group of demographers and population scientists to further their research programme and contribute and give shape to demographic research at a world-leading School of public and global health. LSHTM’s mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice. LSHTM encourages and facilitates collaboration across the institution, particularly through 14 interdisciplinary Centres, where researchers from across the School work together to solve global problems, including the Centre for Maternal, Adolescent, Reproductive and Child Health (MARCH), the Centre for Climate Change and Planetary Health, the Health in Humanitarian Crises Centre and the Centre for Statistical Methodology. Opportunities to collaborate widely have recently received new impetus through the transfer of the two MRC Units in The Gambia and Uganda to LSHTM.

There is scope to fund a junior post for a fixed term to support the activities of the person appointed.

Candidates are encouraged to contact Professor Rebecca Sear (rebecca.sear@lshtm.ac.uk) and/or Professor Jimmy Whitworth (Chair of the Search Committee: jimmy.whitworth@lshtm.ac.uk) for informal discussion about this post.

The post is full time and permanent.

The salary will be on the Professor Band Bii/Bi/A, in the range £70,753 - £105,601 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

Applications should be made on-line via our website at http://jobs.lshtm.ac.uk. Applications should also include the names and email contacts of 2 referees who can be contacted immediately if shortlisted. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Interviews are likely to be held in April 2021, and may be held virtually. Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
