Research Fellow

Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Dynamics

Salary:  £44,847 to £50,808 per annum, inclusive.
Closing Date:  Friday 14 February 2025
Reference:  EPH-EPED-2025-02

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking to appoint a data scientist Research Fellow with an interest in infectious diseases to explore the trends in antibiotic resistance prevalence in infection by age and sex. The post-holder will develop statistical models to analyse large individual patient level datasets exploring the correlation between drivers to antibiotic resistance, such as antibiotic usage in primary and secondary care, and trends by age. They will work with Prof. Gwen Knight on a 5yr Medical Research Council-funded project, joining a group of AMR researchers with the opportunity to explore other questions on AMR dynamics. At the end of this post, it is anticipated that supported career development and opportunities for growth would allow the post holder to be able to apply for independent fellowships.

The post-holder must have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in data science, statistics, mathematical modelling, epidemiology, bioinformatics or another relevant discipline with a strong quantitative component. Relevant experience in analysis of complex datasets, ideally large electronic health records, preferably in the context of infectious diseases and knowledge of statistical methods including regression methods, multi-level models and preferably, Bayesian data analysis is also essential. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to explore large data to answer important policy questions as well to gain skills in mathematical modelling. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed-term until 31 August 2027. The post is funded by the MRC and is available from 06 March 2025.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 6 in the range £44,847- £50,808 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.

We particularly welcome applications from women and those from an ethnic minority background, as they are under-represented within the Infectious Disease Epidemiology & Dynamics department.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk. Please quote reference EPH-EPED-2025-02.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
