Two postdoctoral positions are available to join a team conducting research on modelling to inform decision making in real time during infectious disease outbreaks (https://epiforecasts.io). The post-holders will be supervised by Prof Sebastian Funk and will join a highly successful and supportive group at the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases (CMMID) at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
The main aim of the team is to develop, improve and apply models for improving situational awareness and informing data collection in outbreaks via data analysis and forecasting. This includes systematic assessment of the predictive ability of any forecasts made, and of whether the inclusion of individual, spatial, behavioural or genetic data can improve them. Whilst some parts of the roles will involve work on specific diseases with public health collaborators there is considerable freedom for work within the general aims of the group as well as scope for the development and use of state-of-the-art methodology and computation with a direct impact on public health.
The successful applicants will have a Postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a quantitative discipline such as epidemiology, mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics or computational biology, or similar research experience. Candidates should have proficient knowledge of a programming language for mathematical or statistical modelling, including some experience with R, and be committed to open research and/or software development. Experience in outbreak analysis or model-based forecasting would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the job description.
The posts are full-time and fixed term until 31 March 2025, and available immediately.
The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale Grade 6 in the range £42,875 - £48,691 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
Applications should be made on-line via our website at http://jobs.lshtm.ac.uk. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.
The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.
Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
