Closing Date

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world’s leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.

We are seeking a researcher with skills in quantitative data analysis to join a dynamic team that has, for the past 8 years, developed an extensive body of research on corruption, governance and anti-corruption strategies. In the Accountability in Action project (Understanding and eliminating district-level corruption in the health sectors in Nigeria and Malawi), we have pioneered a novel approach seeking to identify the institutional and structural drivers of corruption, and seeking to identify feasible anti-corruption strategies.

The post holder will lead the analysis of household surveys, in Enugu and Kano states of Nigeria, and in Malawi, exploring user experiences of illicit practices, impact on health care seeking, and perception of actors involved. This is a fantastic opportunity for a researcher to lead and contribute to analysis and write up of high-profile papers on governance and (anti-)corruption, and participate in academic and policy engagement activities. Given our commitment to equitable partnerships, they will be supporting researchers in Malawi and Nigeria to further develop their analysis, and write up papers. They will lead and contribute to analyses utilizing existing global datasets (e.g. Corruption Perception Index, V-Dem, etc.) exploring the relationships between corruption, service delivery and outcomes.

The post holder should have a postgraduate degree with evidence of training in applied quantitative analysis. They should have track record in designing surveys, overseeing their implementation, training researchers, analysing data and playing a lead role in producing peer-reviewed papers (key author positions). This will involve analysing and publishing analysis drawing on national representative surveys but ideally, also on multi-country datasets (including heath and socio-political variable). They will deliver outputs independently and in a timely manner, while engaging with researchers from different disciplinary and country backgrounds. For more information please contact: Prof. Dina Balabanova, dina.balabanova@lshtm.ac.uk.

The post is part-time 17.5 hours per week, 0.5 FTE and fixed term until 31 December 2025. The post is funded by the Accountability in Action of Medical Research Council and is available from 01 August 2025.

The salary will be on the LSHTM salary scale, Grade 6 in the range £45,097 - £51,156 per annum pro rata (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.

Applications should be made on-line via our jobs website. Online applications will be accepted by the automated system until 10pm of the closing date. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk. Please quote reference PHP-GHD-2025-12.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
