The Department benefits from state-of-the-art facilities and strong collaborations, many of which are with partners in disease endemic countries.</p><p>The Department of Infection Biology is looking to appoint a Research Fellow to join the highly successful and supportive team laboratory team of Prof John Kelly at the main Keppel Street building in London.</p><p>The postholder will work in a multidisciplinary project aiming to generate genetically modified T. cruzi cell lines, where quiescence is an inducible phenotype, both in vitro and in vivo and to integrate these lines into the drug-development pipeline to aid the discovery of novel therapeutics that eliminate &ldquo;persister&rdquo; parasites. This will involve undertaking research on <em>Trypanosoma cruzi</em> with the aim of identifying the molecular determinants of persistence after drug treatment.</p><p>The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic, proven expertise in trypanosome genetic manipulation and functional analysis, as evidenced by first name authorship, proven expertise in the generation and analysis of proteomic and RNAseq data, as evidenced by first name authorship. The postholder will be clinically qualified and will contribute to studies focused on developing and conducting studies focused on developing next generation sequencing diagnostic (molecular and serological) approaches for patients with fever, including those returning from outside the UK and those with neurological presentations. The applicant will be expected to undertake a PhD as part of this post. There will be excellent opportunities for publication, and outputs crucial to public health decisions.</p><p>The postholder will work directly with Professor Emma Thomson and Professor Michael Marks, and collaborators at UKHSA. This work is a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL) at UKHSA Porton Down, and the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR). The successful candidate will be based primarily at LSHTM but will work closely with investigators and facilities across all partner institutions.</p><p>The successful applicant must hold a postgraduate degree (such as an MSc) in a relevant topic, be medically qualified with a GMC license to practice and Clinical experience relevant to Infectious Diseases, Microbiology or Virology &ndash; (e.g. specialty training or equivalent experience). They should have experience developing or personally carrying out diagnostics metagenomics either wet-lab or bioinformatical. We work collaboratively with health professionals world-wide to conduct large multi-centre clinical trials aimed at improving patient outcomes in life threatening emergencies. We have an international reputation for practice changing clinical trials, including the CRASH-2 trial (20,000 patients with traumatic bleeding) which identified tranexamic acid as a lifesaving treatment for trauma victims and the WOMAN trial (20,000 women with postpartum bleeding) that showed that tranexamic acid also reduces deaths from bleeding after birth.</p><p>We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Assistant Trial Manager. The successful candidate will support the Trial Manager; play a key role in the daily Trial Management aspects of clinical trials being conducted by our team. Ensuring professional and courteous service to trial collaborators, delivery in a reliable and compliant manner, in accordance with clinical trials regulations and ethical requirements.&nbsp;</p><p>Applicants will have proven relevant experience of working in research/regulated clinical trials, with excellent organisational skills, excellent written, oral communication and numeric skills. The post will be part of the IMPLEMENT-CVD project, a UKRI Future Leader Fellowship aimed at improving implementation of evidence-based approaches to non-communicable diseases in low-resource settings. The postholder will be responsible for conducting economic evaluations (cost-effectiveness analysis, budget impact analysis, and value of implementation analysis). This will include reviewing data from a feasibility study, identifying supplementary data needs, and developing tools for costing in a full trial. The postholder will also contribute to stakeholder mapping and engagement to identify opportunities for intervention sustainability and to ensure policy relevance of the economic evaluation.</p><p>The post-holder must have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic and should have formal training and demonstrated experience in designing and conducting economic evaluations. They should have strong quantitative and analytical skills relevant to economic evaluation including expertise in the use of appropriate analytical software.</p><p>The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 30 June 2028. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.</p><p>LSHTM will provide the academic framework within which the clinical lecturer will refine their research focus and build their own research programme. Clinical and non-clinical academics at LSHTM have research programs in a wide range of primary care and global primary care topics involving cross-disciplinary expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials, mixed methods research, health economics and public health. Particular strengths include: primary health care services and health policy research; the use of electronic health records for research on disease aetiology, safety and effectiveness of medicines and vaccines and health service research; the development and evaluation of community and primary health care approaches/interventions for non-communicable disease detection and management, reproductive health, adolescent health and health promotion.</p><p>The Clinical Lecturer (CL) will join in the ongoing extensive seminar programme, and other educational programs within the clinical and academic institutions. At entry to the scheme, s/he will be introduced to the research active PIs at LSHTM, with a view to selecting the focus for building their program of research. S/he will be expected to apply for research funding e.g. through the Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant small grant scheme for Clinical Lecturers, and to apply for a NIHR, Wellcome Trust or MRC clinical fellowship during the tenure of the clinical lecturer post. The mechanism for vetting the CL&rsquo;s research proposals will be modelled on our existing structure. The CL will be asked to present his/her research proposals to a multidisciplinary panel which includes senior academic staff from both LSHTM and other institutions, who advise on study design and recommend appropriate collaborators for particular aspects of the proposal, e.g. statistical issues or particular laboratory techniques.</p><p>Clinical work will be as a fully qualified General Practitioner on the General Medical Council GP register in a general practice to be agreed with the applicant.&nbsp;</p><p id="isPasted">The successful candidate must be a fully qualified general practitioner currently on the UK General Medical Council GP register, hold a PhD in a relevant subject and have expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research. They must have been a lead or co-author in peer reviewed outputs, significant contributions to at least 4 outputs in in the most recent 5 years that are at least internationally excellent. &nbsp;It would be desirable for the candidate to have experience in generating research income, including securing fellowships, project grants, or supporting the grant applications of others.
