Research Fellow in Cross-cultural Child Protection

The Department of Global Health and Development is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to join The “Honour Project” team within the Faculty of Public Health and Policy, linked to the Gender Health and Violence Centre (GVHC). The post holder will work under Dr Ben Cislaghi as part of a team studying the influence of social norms on violence against children and women.

The post holder’s primary responsibility will be to support the preparation of a research study on Honour, Child Protection, and Social Norms. The ultimate purpose of this study will be to translate this greater understanding of honour into insightful strategies for more effective and culturally-sensitive programming that increases children’s wellbeing across a variety of cultural contexts. The research fellow will also support the work of the team, as agreed with the line manager when such opportunities arise.

The successful candidate must have a background in anthropology, sociology, development study or other relevant social science.  The post holder will require a PhD in a relevant subject, preferably sociology, public health, social psychology, development studies, anthropology, or other relevant social science OR in the case of candidates with a strong professional experience, relevant MA or MSc will be accepted without need for a PhD. They should have knowledge of the challenges of promoting child wellbeing in low and middle-income countries, and proven ability to write up research results for dissemination in a range of formats for different audiences, and data analysis skills. Coordination and liaison skills with a proven history of effectively coordinating projects and the ability to work as a collaborative member of multidisciplinary scientific team are an added value. The appointment is based in London at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It is full-time commencing and funded for 12 months. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway, Grade 6 £39,304-£44,634 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
