Established in 1947, the Medical Research Council in The Gambia has an international reputation for ground-breaking research into some of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the tropics. The overall goal of the Unit is to improve the health of people in developing countries by aiming for excellence in research, healthcare and training. 

The Vaccines & Immunity Theme, led by Professor Beate Kampmann is one of the scientific themes in the MRCG Unit and has a large research program in childhood tuberculosis with partners throughout Africa.

A clinically qualified Research Fellow is being sought to assist with the coordination of a Global Challenges Research Fund grant, further develop our implementation strategies to improve diagnosis and management of childhood tuberculosis (TB), facilitate the coordination of the ongoing research partnership which involves overseeing recruitment of children to ongoing research studies as well as oversight of laboratory work and data collection.  The post-holder will be expected to develop independent but complimentary areas of research in the field of childhood tuberculosis in order to begin to attract independent funding. 

The successful candidate will be a clinician-scientist with a PhD in infectious diseases subject, preferably tuberculosis; experience in the management of children with tuberculosis; experience of working in Africa; track record of research in Global Health; proven publication track record. Advanced knowledge in statistical methods and data analyses would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The successful candidate will be based at the LSHTM in London but will be required to have close links and collaborations with the team based at the MRC Unit in The Gambia and our overseas partners in Mali, Nigeria and Tanzania (financial support will be provided for this required). 

The post is full-time and funded until 31st March 2021. The salary will be on the Academic Pathway scale, Grade 6 scale in the range £39,304 - £44,634, per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the MRCG terms and conditions of service.  Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
