The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU) was established jointly by the Tanzanian National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) as a centre of research excellence in East Africa, building on a long-term research partnership.
We have an exciting and challenging vacancy for Associate Director – Finance and Administration of MITU, whose mission is to carry out research on HIV and related infections, and other conditions of public health importance in Tanzania. The post-holder will be employed as a staff member of LSHTM, and will be based full-time in Mwanza.
The person appointed will be responsible for ensuring the effective running of the MITU office and premises; managing and developing MITU’s finance function; providing administrative and financial leadership, planning and day-to-day support to MITU’s projects; and supporting MITU’s Scientific Director in the development and implementation of MITU’s policies and procedures. The post holder will have responsibility for the internal affairs of the unit including planning, budgets, logistics, procurement, computing, human resources, communication, publicity and promotion. The workload will be demanding, requiring the ability to manage constantly shifting priorities.
The successful candidate will have administrative experience in a senior role, including experience of preparing and managing budgets and financial reports; experience of providing effective leadership in a multi-disciplinary team; experience of the preparation of financial books of account for annual audit and the preparation of year-end balance; excellent written and oral communication skills in English; experience of HR management within a large organisation. This full-time appointment will be for 24 months and will commence on 1 June 2017. Further extension of the position may be possible subject to funding. The appointment will be made on the School’s Professional Support Pathway Grade 7 with a starting salary of between £44,226 and £50,629 per annum inclusive, depending on qualifications and experience. Additional overseas allowances and benefits will be provided as appropriate.
The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
