We are seeking a Research Assistant to support research on malaria transmission and vaccination. The postholder will develop and apply serological tools to characterise antibody responses to malaria parasites and vaccines, including their magnitude, breadth and antigen specificity, and contribute to the development of approaches for investigating antibody function. These tools will be used to study naturally acquired and vaccine-induced immunity, and patterns of malaria exposure in field and clinical studies.

The role will focus on multiplex bead-based assays and analysis of the resulting data. It will also offer opportunities to apply these approaches to other infectious diseases and to work with a multidisciplinary, international research team at collaborating research sites.

The successful candidate will have a relevant first degree in the field of immunology, infectious diseases or a closely related subject, relevant experience in performing Luminex-based multiplex serological assays on human samples, including samples from field-based studies of infectious diseases, with demonstrable evidence of hands-on sample preparation, plate processing and use of appropriate controls, relevant analytical skills in processing, analysing and visualising multiplex serological datasets and associated field-study data in R, with demonstrable evidence of writing or adapting scripts for data cleaning, quality control and preparation of scientific figures. We are seeking a Research Fellow to lead the bioinformatic analysis of transcriptomic, spatial transcriptomic, genomic, and metabolomic data in cutting-edge projects exploring host–pathogen interactions. The successful candidate will join a new ERC-funded research programme investigating the fundamental biology of Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. Research on T. pallidum is particularly challenging because the bacterium depends on host cells for growth, complicating its cultivation in vitro and leaving many critical questions unanswered. This project aims to address these knowledge gaps by uncovering the organism’s distinctive biology and its interactions with the host. Ultimately, the research seeks to identify promising vaccine candidates, deepen our understanding of T. pallidum pathogenesis, and contribute to improved strategies for combating syphilis.

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic, relevant experience in RNA-seq data analysis (host and/or pathogen), experience in, or a strong interest in, host - pathogen interaction and infection biology, a good understanding of how transcriptomic and spatial transcriptomic data are generated in the laboratory, and the ability to adjust analyses to account for potential wet-lab limitations. We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join a new ERC funded research programme investigating the fundamental biology of Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis, and its interactions with the human host. They will have relevant experience in aseptic techniques and sterile workflows, familiarity with CL2 environments, strong tissue culture experience, and good laboratory organisation and management. We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic team member to work with Professor Kat Holt, to develop standardized protocols and reporting templates for sequence-based detection of pathogens in the hospital environment. They will undertake a review of current protocols and practices, and undertake a series of consultations and workshops with experts and potential users to develop consensus protocols suitable for use in low-resource settings. The appointee will also lead on the development of a standardized metadata template for reporting results, in partnership with the Public Health Alliance for Genomic Epidemiology (PHA4GE). This is a one-year post supported by a Gates Foundation grant.

The successful candidate will have a degree in Microbiology or a related discipline, and knowledge and experience of applying sequencing-based approaches to detect bacterial pathogens in the hospital environment, spanning all aspects from sampling to sequencing to bioinformatics analysis. This should include experience in developing and optimizing laboratory protocols for metagenomics, including different approaches to sampling and target enrichment, evidenced through authorship of published research articles and/or protocols. They will also have experience in bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics data, and ideally experience with curation, validation, and submission of such data to public repositories. The postholder will be required to communicate orally and in written form with a wide variety of experts and stakeholders including clinical microbiology and infection prevention and control teams. Ideally, they will have some experience with investigating infectious disease outbreaks in hospital settings, and working in or in partnership with low-resource hospital settings in Africa or Asia.
