The Digital Determinants of Health Hub is seeking a Research Fellow for a Wellcome Trust-funded programme examining how digital environments influence adolescent health.

The candidate will lead development of a novel multimodal-GenAI framework to annotate and classify social media data (video, audio, text), using high-performance computing environments to develop privacy-preserving analytical pipelines for social media data donation research.

Working with Dr Amrit Kaur Purba (Principal Investigator), and interdisciplinary collaborators, they will lead on human annotation, codebook development, multimodal embedding generation, model training and refinement, and large-scale inference workflows. The project engages UK-government stakeholders, reflecting its policy relevance.

Applicants should hold a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational social science, data science, or a related computational discipline.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to investigate enteric pathogens, with a particular focus on Campylobacter jejuni, one of the leading bacterial causes of human gastroenteritis globally. This post aims to apply integrated multi-omic approaches to characterise the interactions between enteric pathogens, the intestinal microbiota and the host (particularly avian biology). Using genomic, metagenomic, and metabolomic analyses, the successful candidate will investigate the microbial and functional mechanisms that underpin bacterial colonisation, persistence and transmission. The project will integrate high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatic analyses and systems-level data integration to identify microbial and metabolic signatures associated with pathogen fitness, gut ecology and disease. The Research Assistant will contribute to studies that improve our understanding of enteric pathogen biology and host–microbiome interactions, generating new insights to support the development of strategies to reduce the burden of enteric disease.

The post will be based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine with the team of Dr Ozan Gundogdu and his team. 

The successful applicant will have a postgraduate degree in a relevant biological science field, relevant experience in shotgun metagenomic sequencing, microbial genome assembly, taxonomic and functional annotation, and analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), experience analysing large sequencing datasets using bioinformatic workflows and statistical approaches, including microbial diversity analyses, differential abundance testing and multivariate analyses, experience with R for data analysis and visualisation, experience integrating genomic and functional datasets to investigate host–microbiome–pathogen interactions and interpreting complex biological datasets to address questions in infectious disease and microbial ecology. The Research Fellow will conduct statistical analyses on national and sub-national survey data collected through a new Gates Foundation-funded initiative at the Vaccine Confidence Project, focused on the Immunisation Metrics and Monitoring Systems (IMMS). This global project aims to assess the behavioural and social drivers of vaccine uptake and to identify both supply- and demand-side barriers to immunisation. The post-holder will contribute to modelling vaccination barriers and facilitators, develop forecasts of vaccine coverage for existing and novel vaccines (e.g. HPV, RSV, malaria), and support the design and implementation of small area estimation and reweighting strategies in data-scarce settings.

The Research Fellow will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to inform global vaccine policy, contributing to peer-reviewed publications, public-facing data dashboards, and targeted policy briefs aimed at improving vaccine equity and access.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to work on the HCV combination prevention project in people who inject drugs and prisoners (HepC3P). The HepC3P project will generate evidence on innovative interventions including long acting depot buprenorphine (an opioid agonist therapy) and low-dead space syringes to prevent hepatitis C. Travel to project sites including Ukraine, Nigeria, Vietnam, South Africa and India will be necessary.
