We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow within the Department of Clinical Research. The post will be part of Professor Joseph Jarvis' research group, contributing to a portfolio of internationally recognised research programmes focused on advanced HIV disease (AHD).

The postholder will be a medically qualified doctor with full GMC registration and a licence to practise, have experience in clinical HIV and opportunistic infection research in sub-Saharan Africa, ideally in resource-limited settings, and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for people living with AHD, clinical and/or research experience in HIV medicine, advanced HIV disease and opportunistic infections.

The post is part-time 0.2 FTE (8 hours per week) and fixed-term until 31 August 2028. The post is funded by the NIHR Senior Investigator Award. The salary will be on the salary scale for clinical academic doctors in training (2016 contract/ pay system- updated 2018) £67,325 - £76,582 per annum pro rata plus £2,162 per annum pro rata London allowance and will be determined based on relevant experience.

This post is structured as a secondary appointment for an NHS resident doctor in Infectious Diseases. The postholder must hold, or be eligible to hold, substantive employment with an NHS Trust (typically a London teaching hospital) and will apply for Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training, reducing their clinical FTE to 0.8 to accommodate this 0.2 FTE LSHTM appointment. LTFT training is available as of right under current NHS junior doctor contract terms and conditions. Clinical governance and accountability for patient care remain at all times the responsibility of the NHS employer. Applicants who do not hold existing substantive NHS employment in Infectious Diseases are not eligible for this post.

The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. We are seeking for an enthusiastic and productive team member, with experience in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. The postholder will have an interest in learning new skills and in working with colleagues from a range of backgrounds to advance the research agenda on sexually transmitted infections (STI) in England and worldwide.

The postholder will join a supportive team and will be directly responsible for developing and using mathematical models to understand the potential impact of a range of innovative approaches to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality due to Syphilis and other STIs.

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic and relevant experience in the development, fitting and calibration of mathematical models of infectious diseases including their use to evaluate the potential, and real-world impact of interventions. Experience in reviewing non-modelling literature to develop and parameterise models, and of undertaking statistical analyses of epidemiological data sets are also essential to the role. The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed term until 31 August 2029. The post is funded by the NIHR and is available from 01 September 2026.
