We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to investigate enteric pathogens, with a particular focus on Campylobacter jejuni, one of the leading bacterial causes of human gastroenteritis globally. This post aims to apply integrated multi-omic approaches to characterise the interactions between enteric pathogens, the intestinal microbiota and the host (particularly avian biology). Using genomic, metagenomic, and metabolomic analyses, the successful candidate will investigate the microbial and functional mechanisms that underpin bacterial colonisation, persistence and transmission. The project will integrate high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatic analyses and systems-level data integration to identify microbial and metabolic signatures associated with pathogen fitness, gut ecology and disease. The Research Assistant will contribute to studies that improve our understanding of enteric pathogen biology and host–microbiome interactions, generating new insights to support the development of strategies to reduce the burden of enteric disease.

The post will be based at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine with the team of Dr Ozan Gundogdu and his team. 

The successful applicant will have a postgraduate degree in a relevant biological science field, relevant experience in shotgun metagenomic sequencing, microbial genome assembly, taxonomic and functional annotation, and analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), experience analysing large sequencing datasets using bioinformatic workflows and statistical approaches, including microbial diversity analyses, differential abundance testing and multivariate analyses, experience with R for data analysis and visualisation, experience integrating genomic and functional datasets to investigate host–microbiome–pathogen interactions and interpreting complex biological datasets to address questions in infectious disease and microbial ecology. Experience in microbiome and microbial ecology research using integrated multi-omic approaches (particularly avian biology) is highly desirable. The post is part-time 17.5 hours per week, 0.5 FTE and fixed term until 30 September 2027 or for 12 months from start date. The post is funded by the BBSRC and is available from 01 October 2026.

We are seeking to appoint a Clinical Research Fellow within the Department of Clinical Research. The post will be part of Professor Joseph Jarvis' research group, contributing to a portfolio of internationally recognised research programmes focused on advanced HIV disease (AHD).

The postholder will be a medically qualified doctor with full GMC registration and a licence to practise, have experience in clinical HIV and opportunistic infection research in sub-Saharan Africa, ideally in resource-limited settings, and a strong commitment to improving outcomes for people living with AHD, clinical and/or research experience in HIV medicine, advanced HIV disease and opportunistic infections.

The post is part-time 0.2 FTE (8 hours per week) and fixed-term until 31 August 2028. The post is funded by the NIHR Senior Investigator Award. The salary will be on the salary scale for clinical academic doctors in training (2016 contract/ pay system- updated 2018) £67,325 - £76,582 per annum pro rata plus £2,162 per annum pro rata London allowance and will be determined based on relevant experience.

This post is structured as a secondary appointment for an NHS resident doctor in Infectious Diseases. The postholder must hold, or be eligible to hold, substantive employment with an NHS Trust (typically a London teaching hospital) and will apply for Less Than Full Time (LTFT) training, reducing their clinical FTE to 0.8 to accommodate this 0.2 FTE LSHTM appointment. LTFT training is available as of right under current NHS junior doctor contract terms and conditions. Clinical governance and accountability for patient care remain at all times the responsibility of the NHS employer. We are seeking for an enthusiastic and productive team member, with experience in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases. The postholder will have an interest in learning new skills and in working with colleagues from a range of backgrounds to advance the research agenda on sexually transmitted infections (STI) in England and worldwide.

The postholder will join a supportive team and will be directly responsible for developing and using mathematical models to understand the potential impact of a range of innovative approaches to reduce the burden of morbidity and mortality due to Syphilis and other STIs.

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic and relevant experience in the development, fitting and calibration of mathematical models of infectious diseases including their use to evaluate the potential, and real-world impact of interventions. Experience in reviewing non-modelling literature to develop and parameterise models, and of undertaking statistical analyses of epidemiological data sets are also essential to the role. An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Fellow to join a multidisciplinary project team studying cholera transmission, the effect of oral cholera vaccination (OCV) and the performance of cholera diagnostics in Uvira, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The postholder will be a member of the Environmental Health Group at LSHTM and work closely with project team members from the University of Geneva.  

The postholder will play a critical role in the design, development and implementation of research and laboratory protocols, as well as coordinating and managing field data collection, supervision of laboratory teams, data management and analysis, and publication of scientific articles. The post will involve remote supervision of laboratory teams and may require considerable travel to the study site in Uvira, DRC (dependent on security situation in eastern DRC), and some travel to our partner laboratories in Bujumbura, Burundi and Kinshasa, DRC or other regional laboratories. 

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic, and relevant experience working with bacterial pathogens (culture, contamination control and safe laboratory practices), using molecular microbiology techniques (DNA extraction and qPCR) and handling human and environmental samples (stool, water, swabs, and/or blood). Experience as a study coordinator and/or managing fieldwork/survey teams is also essential. Excellent written and spoken English and French are essential to the position.
