Department: Department of Pathogen Molecular Biology | Closing Date: 24 May 2013 | Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE A post-doctoral position is available in Dr Sam Alsford’s laboratory investigating the molecular and cell biology of the African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei, with particular emphasis on the parasite’s interaction with its host environment. We are primarily interested in characterising the proteins responsible for uptake, intracellular transit and activation of host-derived trypanolytic factors. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated researcher and must hold a PhD in a relevant subject, have a proven track record in molecular and cellular biology, and have significant experience in molecular cloning, cell culture and microscopy, as well as a keen interest in host-parasite interactions. The post is funded by the Medical Research Council for a period of 3 years and is available from 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2016. Salary will be from £36,018 to £40,904 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The successful candidate will be placed on the scales according to skills and experience. Research Assistant/Fellow in Epidemiological Methods for Impact Evaluation (OC-RAF)

Department: Faculty of Epidemiology & Population Health | Closing Date: 23 May 2013 | An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant/Research Fellow to join the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The post-holder will join a team providing methodological support to impact evaluations of interventions to reduce maternal mortality and unwanted pregnancy. The initiative is funded by Merck for Mothers. ‘Impact Evaluation’ is a field of growing interest in public health and development incorporating rigorous evaluation strategies for complex interventions. The post-holder will support a LSHTM team and work closely with in-country implementers to conduct these evaluations. The post-holder will also contribute to the School’s MARCH Centre, a cross-faculty initiative that brings together over 100 researchers to improve health for women, children and families around the world. The post-holder will have an opportunity to participate in the Evaluation Centre, a forum for LSHTM and external staff to support, discuss and resolve methodological issues in evaluation. The post-holder must have strong quantitative and methodological skills. He/she will have at least a Masters degree in Epidemiology/Medical Statistics, or a related discipline. He/she should be able to demonstrate and apply to real-life situations an understanding of key issues in impact evaluation in both non-randomised and randomised-trial designs, as well as from secondary analysis of observational data. The post will be based at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and will include travel to the following countries: Uganda, India, Brazil, Zambia, the USA, and possibly Nigeria among others. A desire and willingness to travel is, therefore, essential. The ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary scientific team is also essential. An ability to demonstrate high quality writing skills is essential. The appointment is available immediately and is currently funded until September 2014. The post holder will work on methods to manage and exploit the high dimensionality of current studies such as genome-wide association scans and whole-genome sequencing. Application areas include predicting disease risk using whole genome markers, causal inference using Mendelian randomisation, dealing with selection bias, and hierarchical modelling of structured datasets. The post holder will work closely with collaborators in cardiovascular, psychiatric and cancer genetics to optimise the analysis of large, intensively phenotyped cohorts. The post holder will also be required to participate in report-writing, preparation of scientific papers and development of grant applications for further funding. As a Research Fellow or Lecturer the post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching of epidemiological and/or statistical methods for our post-graduate students, and provide academic support for research students. The successful applicant will have a PhD in Statistical Genetics or Medical Statistics with experience of epidemiological data and strong computer programming skills. Knowledge of statistical techniques used in genetic epidemiology, ideally with large-scale genetic databases, is essential. The post holder will be used to working independently and have experience of collaborating with biomedical scientists. Clinical Research Fellow (based in South Africa) (AG2)

Department: Department of Clinical Research | Closing Date: 12 Jun 2013 | The post holder will take responsibility for managing a project investigating causes of death among people with HIV attending primary care facilities in South Africa. The project is primarily a sub-study of the TB Fast Track trial, which is investigating whether a novel algorithm based on point-of-care tests for tuberculosis can reduce early mortality among people with advanced HIV disease presenting to start ART. The 20 TB Fast Track study clinics are in Gauteng, North West and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. The post holder will be responsible for developing systems for rapid ascertainment of deaths of study participants; conducting targeted needle autopsies and coordinating verbal autopsies with relatives of the deceased. The post holder will manage this project at the study sites, working with study staff employed through Aurum Institute, and with local clinic staff. The project, a collaboration between LSHTM, Aurum Institute, Foundation for Professional Development, National Health Laboratory Services, the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and Johns Hopkins Centre for TB Research, is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This post is a collaborative venture with Public Health England (PHE) who are providing the funding, and the post-holder will have an honorary contract with PHE. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with both institutions. The post will be located in the Department of Social and Environmental Health Research of the Faculty of Public Health and Policy, but will be expected to draw on relevant expertise and develop close working relationships, as appropriate, within other Departments and Faculties of the School. The applicant is also expected to spend approximately half of their time at PHE Colindale to draw on expertise and facilitate joint working with colleagues based there. Applicants will join a flourishing team of health economists and staff from complementary disciplines in the Faculty of Public Health and Policy, and should bring an international reputation in relevant areas of economics. Successful candidates will have interests in economic evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis, especially as applied to aspects related to public health, such as communicable disease and environmental health, and evaluating complex public health interventions which cross multiple sectors. Within environmental health, specific areas might include, but are not limited to, housing, flood risks, cold weather responses, extreme weather events, chemical and radiation hazard responses, and adaptation to climate change. The successful candidate will be keen to maximise the advantages of bringing together the strengths of PHE and LSHTM, to create a world class programme of work in this area.
